UNESCO World heritage Dolomites

Michael Wachtler, naturalist, researcher and founder of the Dolomites Museum DoloMythos in Innichen, is one of the most prominent experts on the Dolomites. With numerous discoveries of fossilised plants and animals, he has significantly expanded the scientific understanding of the formation of this unique mountain landscape. However, his attitude towards the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of deep disappointment. In his essay ‘Ten Years of World Heritage Dolomites or the Destruction of the Dolomites’, he sharply criticises the fact that the designation has led not to protection but to increased exploitation of the region.

An old man stands by the lake and looks into the distance Michael Wachtler is facing an abyss Michael Wachtler in the mountains with the camera in his hand Sunset in the Dolomites

Instead of sustainable development, he sees an increase in mass tourism, infrastructure projects and destruction of nature – for example, through the construction of large car parks at Lake Braies or the creation of ‘UNESCO World Heritage Terraces’ in sensitive mountain regions. Wachtler laments that local voices and nature-oriented lifestyles are being ignored, while economic interests dominate. His appeal: the Dolomites deserve genuine protection and respect – not just on paper, but in the way their landscape and history are treated in everyday life.
